How to Protect Your Translucent Soles

Sometimes we acquire a pair of shoes that we become particularly attached to and wish to keep wearing for years to come. This can be difficult if you want to wear those shoes often.  Fortunately, there are many products on the market that help protect your shoe’s soles, prolonging their lives so you can wear them more often. Some of these products, like heel guards or rubber sole bottoms, work great for many types of footwear – but not if you have sneakers with clear or translucent soles. If you have shoes with translucent soles, there are several ways you can keep them protected.

1. Clear Vinyl Sole Sticker Protectors

Vinyl sheet protectors are self-adhesive and completely clear. They can protect the entire bottom of your shoes. If you have new sneakers that you would like to keep looking new, clear vinyl sheet protectors are the perfect choice. To apply these coatings, make sure that your shoe bottoms are very clean and be very careful when applying. Clear vinyl sheet protectors work best with smoother surfaces.

2. Clear Shoe Goo

Shoe Goo, or similar products, can provide a clear coat to protect your soles. It adheres fairly well to translucent surfaces and does a good job of leveling out worn areas. You’ll need to practice to get the hang of applying the correct thickness and avoid messes. When it hardens, Shoe Goo feels like rubber and is mostly clear, making it a good option for translucent soles.

3. Clean Soles after excessive use

This last tip is not a product, but keeping your soles well-cleaned will help keep them protected. Be sure to clean your shoes if you step in anything that might be corrosive, salt-like, or oily. Sneaker soles can be washed with soap and water to remove dirt, mud, and debris. Clear rubber soles tend to take on a yellow hue after a while as part of a natural oxidation process after exposure to air; to prevent this, you can use clear nail polish and store your shoes in an airtight bag when you’re not wearing them. A product called Sea Glow can help remove the yellow tint if it does occur.
