Trash never looked so good.

We live in a time where people are becoming more conscious about their waste. Because of this, many people are taking steps to reduce and recycle their waste, especially plastic waste. This is because we humans know that it is our responsibility to keep the earth and our oceans clean. All the trash on earth comes from humans, which means that the solutions must also come from humans. Sneaker brands are starting to jump on the recycling bandwagon to show their fans that they too care about the environment. For instance, you have the Adidas x Parley for the Oceans that are made of recycled ocean plastic and illegal fishing nets. Another example is the Converse Renew, which are made from recycled cotton, denim, and plastic. The newest player in the recycled shoe game is Nike coming in with the unique Space Hippie Line.

The Space Hippie line currently has 4 different styles, inspired by life on mars, which are simply named Space Hippie 1-4. Each silhouette provides a unique fit option – traditional laces, lace-less, and Flyease.

These kicks are made with a unique ‘Space Waste Yarn’ which includes about 85% recycled polyester. The sources for ‘Space Waste Yarn’ are plastic bottles, t-shirts, and yarn scraps. The midsoles are made out of Nike Grind combined with 100% recycled foam materials. Nike Grind is created from recycling Nike’s surplus materials into granules. The insoles are made from ZoomX foam scraps, just like Nike’s Next% running shoes.

Space Hippie 1

Made up of at least 50% recycled materials by weight. Space Hippie 1 is an excellent choice for you runners and walkers out there. Complete with recycled uppers, midsoles, and insoles, this pair has a comfortable sock-like feel. This pair comes with rope laces.

Space Hippie 2

A lace-less design made up of at least 50% recycled materials. The main difference between these and the 1’s is that this pair has no laces. Other than that, and the slight gap on the medial quarter the designs are pretty similar.

Space Hippie 3

In my opinion, this high-top pair pf Space Hippies looks the most like something out of a science fiction space movie out of the bunch. Made up of at least 45% recycled materials by weight, it has the recycled Space Yarn upper and recycled midsoles and insoles like the other pairs. Additionally, this pair includes a cool looking exposed Flyease lacing system.

Space Hippie 4

Unlike 1-3 the Space Hippie 4 currently has 2 colorways. It is made up of at least 25% recycled materials, making this the least recycled shoe of the Space Hippie line. The Space Hippie 4 is a lace-less design with a slightly sleeker silhouette than the 1’s and 2’s. This design is great for casual walks or someone who is on their feet all day. The Crimson colorway is a light grey with an orange swoosh and silver heel tab. The Volt colorway is a darker grey with a green swoosh and black heel tab.
