After giving sneakerheads some nostalgia last year with the return of the Zig technology, Reebok has introduced a shoe that will carry the popular cushioning innovation into the next generation — the Zig Kinetica.

The Collaboration

The brand is well aware of the big shoes that it needs to fill with this new sneaker. So, it has tapped a name synonymous with greatness and sporting excellence, one that the entire world is familiar with — Ultimate Fighting Championship legend Conor McGregor.

The Zig Kinetica brings back Reebok’s beloved zigzag midsole. There are also a few new features that include what they call the Floatride Fuel cushioning, which gives the kicks a hint of responsiveness. The sneaker also has a sole encapsulating shell called the Zig Energy Shell that helps in boosting stability, for when you are crushing a workout or just taking a leisurely stroll through the park. Additionally, the Zig Kinetica also features rubber Energy Bands in the underfoot area that both expand and contract, to give more pep to each of your steps.

The Release

The Zig Kinetica retails for $120 and was originally released in November 2019 in four different colorways. Conor’s kicks were made available to the public on February 21, 2020. While a little subtle for Conor’s outspoken personality, the shoe still managed to turn heads with its vibrant orange hits. Conor’s colorway also came with a very limited edition “Zigurine” action figure. Reebok says only 100 of these were made.

Zig Tech

Reebok introduced the world to Zig Tech almost a decade ago in 2010. Its arrival was heralded by then Reebok athlete, John Wall.  This design also captured the attention of sneakerheads everywhere with the unique zigzag shape of the sole. It spawned a number of other models until it finally got shelved a few years later. It made a surprise return in September 2019 when Reebok unveiled the Zig Kinetica Concept Type 1 on the runways of New York and Paris during the Fashion Week. Prior to the release of Conor’s kicks, Reebok also collaborated with the popular streetwear brand Billionaire Boys Club for a pair that was dressed in black and mint green and featured a subtle star print.

According to Reebok, the shoe is meant to shatter barriers between sports and style. Whether it is worn on the runway of posh fashion events, a grimy gym, or even on the streets, the Zig Kinetica is one of the brand’s landmark shoes and is perfectly content in being indefinable. The Zig Kinetica was designed to transform the way its users move with both design and innovation elements that support each step of your stride. Reebok proudly claims that this shoe is not just the next step in the evolution of sneakers but rather in footwear in general.

Reebok believes it has in Conor, the perfect athlete to bring forth its latest product. The 31-year old Irishman is a former featherweight and lightweight UFC champion. He is also one of mixed martial arts’ (MMA) biggest pay-per-view attractions. His clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229 was a landmark event for both the UFC and the sport in general as it drew a mind-blowing 2.4 million buys. That feat established a record for the most ever in MMA history.
